3 simple conversations to make story time more powerful

01  PREPARE- BEFORE READING

Prepare: Wake up their thinking before the first page.

•  What do you notice on the cover?
• What do you think this book will be about?
• Have you ever experienced something like this?

02 INTERACT- DURING READING

Interact: Build stronger readers through conversation while you read.

• What do you think will happen next?
• Why do you think the character did that?
• How is the character feeling?
• What makes you think that?
• This part makes me think about...

03 EXTEND- AFTER READING

Extend: Help them take the story beyond the book.

• My favorite part of the story was...
• What did this book make you think about?
• Would you recommend this book? Why or why not?

The goal isn’t to test your child—it’s to grow. Use these as conversation starters, not a checklist. Just sprinkle a few into story time.
